Feathers of the Culture: Unmasking the Cannabis Multi-State Operator Part I

Culture is the manifestation and expression of intellect, traditions, and beliefs that enrich our world. Cannabis has a rich culture that is intertwined in molding our arts, music, spirituality, politics, wealth, and even how we collectively identify ourselves. Today, cannabis is revered as a powerhouse with immense therapeutic potential and economic transformation. Its impact is so significant, individual states have taken proactive measures to regulate cannabis, even in the face of federal illegality. However, given this profound influence, cannabis culture has not been exempt from experiencing its share of negative repercussions. In this multi-part series, our discussion will focus on Multi-State Operators (MSOs); examining both the positive influences and detrimental consequences that arise when the commercialization of culture is at stake.

Public Perception

First, we must understand the meaning of a Multi-State Operator or MSO. MSOs are licensed cannabis companies that operate in multiple states within the United States where cannabis is medically and/or recreationally legal. These companies are typically large operators who have expanded their operations by obtaining state licenses to cultivate, process, and/or dispense cannabis products, and more importantly, control their states flow of cannabis.

MSOs such as Curaleaf, Holistic Industries, Trulieve, Green Thumb Industries, and TerrAscend have successfully established their presence in conducting business in my home state of Maryland. Their entry into the cannabis marketplace has created a footprint where business, innovation, research & development, and employment opportunities can be utilized to not only produce medicine but grow the market's knowledge and expertise, standard practices, and brand growth; creating multi-millionaires out of small operations. I went after the opportunity working for a MSO at the inception of medical legalization in Maryland and took full advantage of the advantages it offered. However, the true nature of working for these corporate cannabis entities often goes under the radar.

Beyond the Veil

The culture and work environment within an MSO can significantly impact employees' experience and views of cannabis. Contrary to the lighthearted and stereotypical portrayal depicted in shows like 'Disjointed,' the reality of the cannabis industry is far from the humorous façade presented. Based on my personal experience and the shared accounts of numerous former employees reflected in Indeed reviews, its evident that MSOs often prioritize profitability above employee satisfaction; neglecting crucial aspects such as safety, competitive compensation, and benefits. This corporate approach consequently contributes to a high turnover rate within the industry and is a huge misfire as employees are the the face of the business in not only selling cannabis products at dispensaries but making sure the plant is grown and processed in the best of conditions.

The industries emphasis on products, consumption, and profit produces a cycle of miseducation, leading budtenders to prioritize high THC numbers and overlook essential cannabinoids.  This collective behavior results in a culture that becomes saturated, commercialized, and stigmatized by individuals who lack any genuine connection or concern for upholding a true image of cannabis culture.

Moving Forward

It's important to note that the effects of MSOs on employees can vary significantly depending on the specific company and its practices, however,  bringing attention to these issues will raise awareness to consumers and hold MSOs  accountable in creating better work environments, bringing forth quality medicine for cannabis users, and ultimately elevating cannabis culture beyond profit and consumption.

I strongly advocate for this culture to be operated by people with a genuine love for cannabis. I fear the current commercialization of cannabis culture could follow in the same path of the exploitation seen in Black culture, where influential elites exert their control over our way of socializing and profiting, manipulating the very essence of our community.

Stay tuned for Part II of our series as we dive deeper into the cultural influence of MSOs in shaping the cannabis industry and explore their intricate impact on society.
